Member of the group of organic compounds
containing the carbonyl group, CO, bonded to
two atoms of carbon (instead of one carbon
and one hydrogen as in aldehydes). Ketones
are liquids or low-melting-point solids,
slightly soluble in water. An example is
acetone (technical name propanone), CH3COCH3,
used as a solvent.
